Nine Lives is a collection of short stories that explores how south Asia's religious traditions are being affected by modernity. The author asks: "What does it actually mean to be a holy man or a Jain nun, a mystic or a tantric seeking salvation on the roads of modern India, as the Tata trucks thunder past?" In response, he interviews nine individuals with remarkable stories. This is a fascinating book that not only illuminates India’s relationship with religion buts casts the whole genre of travel writing in new light. An excellent book to read over the holidays, while considering one of our upcoming trips to India.
Nine Lives: In Search of the Sacred in Modern India by William Dalrymble, published by Bloomsbury.

The Selva Verde Lodge preserves nearly 500 acres of endangered tropical forest and the multitude of species that call it home. The Lodge is part of the San Jose – La Selva Biological Corridor and funds the Sarapiqui Conservation Learning Center focusing on environmental education and community development.
This is the first lodge we visit on our tour to Costa Rica in February and sets the tone for our exploration of this amazing tropical treasure house of birds, plants and mammals on both sides of the Continental Divide. There are a few places still available on our February 2010 departure.

In Papua New Guinea, you’ll meet people decked out for daily life with shells, feathers, party streamers, face tattoos, ear rings, frangipani garlands, and armbands stuffed with flowers. And it isn’t just people who have exhibitionist tendencies – the landscape is outrageously mountainous and the flora and fauna are equally extravagant with flying foxes, wild orchids and the largest butterflies in the world.
Lewie is taking a small group with him to explore this remote corner of the South Pacific in August for the Mt. Hagen Festival – a thrilling trip indeed!
