At a concert one night at the world-famous concert hall in Vienna, the Musikverein, Orchestra Mozart was conducted by Claudio Abbado. Orchestra Mozart is based in Italy and is made up of young players, mostly hand-picked by Abbado. The love of this orchestra for its mentor was very clear, and the members played like gods for him. At this time, Abbado had returned to his career after a serious bout of stomach cancer. He has since passed away. He was frail and weak at the time, but still exuded energy and vitality. The performance was crisp, fresh and full of energy and warmth, resulting in a performance of the work that, in my life, has never been matched.
