Anthropology of the American Southwest

I am thrilled to visit the American Southwest with you! This is undoubtedly a “land of enchantment” with welcoming peoples, stunning geography, big skies, high deserts, and deep canyons.

The villages of the ancestors of today’s Pueblo peoples dot the mesas, canyons, and cliffs of this phenomenal geographic and human landscape. Corn agriculture first arose in North America here and we see its significance through time and traditions – ones marked by the technology and artistry of the ancestors and their descendants. Some of the continent’s most compelling civilizations arose here as a result of this truly human plant.

If culture, history, archaeology, stunning art and architecture inspire you, as they do me, please join your fellow UBC alumni to walk the rooms and kivas of Pueblo Bonito, the “beautiful house,” of the famed Chaco Canyon and enjoy some of America’s most spectacular National monuments. We will be enchanted by the music, dance, and art; experience celebrated southwest cuisine; pass time in some of the West’s most historic plazas; and journey through what are truly the colours of the Pueblo world: the land, the sky, the ceremony, and social life of its peoples.
