Bathurst Inlet: An Arctic Oasis

Jun 28 - Jul 05, 2022

8 days | Canada | Quest Nature Tours

Imagine yourself in a place of rolling hills, snaking eskers, gently meandering rivers and awesome gorges, walking among a plethora of wildflowers, observing breeding shorebirds and songbirds up-close, perhaps seeing a Barren-ground Caribou with magnificent antlers across the horizon. From the moment you step off the plane at Bathurst Inlet, you will be in awe of the vastness of the land. Each rise in the tundra brings another discovery.

Bathurst Inlet is an oasis of wildlife on the mid-Arctic coast 50 kilometres above the Arctic Circle. The relatively mild climate encourages diverse and luxuriant vegetation providing prime habitat for northern life. More than 125 species of wildflower have been identified here. Some 80 bird species including Tundra Swan, Whimbrel and the near-legendary Yellow-billed Loon can be found here during the summer, and Muskoxen and Barren-ground Grizzly Bears roam.

In addition to wildlife, we will have unparalleled opportunities to delve into geology and will learn how to “read the land”. We will also discover ancient signs of human activity including fox traps, food caches, tent rings and caribou decoy inuksuits. In the evenings, we can relax at Bathurst Inlet Lodge, an historic Hudson’s Bay trading post. Our stay would not be complete without a chance to meet the modern Bathurst Inlet residents, some of whom have key roles in the operation of our lodge. Every encounter here will be a discovery!
