Inner China

Tour Leader Amanda Butler recently hosted a webinar about this tour! Click here to watch (29 mins.)

This tour will particularly appeal to those who have already visited China’s standard tourist locations and would like to delve into lesser known locations and cultures, as well as intrepid first-time travellers seeking curated, off-the-beaten-trail experiences.

Our time will first be spent in ancient villages and in the stunning landscapes of Yunnan, the land ‘south of the clouds’. We’ll see fine examples of Qing Dynasty architecture, Confucian temples, and private gardens and those jaw-droppingly spectacular rice terraces. In the colourful markets, we’ll meet Hani and Yi people who have tended the terraces for over a thousand years. Then we cross the Cangshan Mountains to Dali, the cultural centre of Yunnan with its well-preserved Bai architecture. Here we’ll learn to prepare local dishes and try  our hand at 1000-year-old tie-dyeing techniques. We’ll meet Bai people known for their brilliant marble work, and the Naxi and Tibetan people in the high plateau.

A dramatic change of scenery meets us in Guangxi with the sublime limestone karst hills towering over the poetic landscape. Travel by boat from Guilin to Yangshuo and along the Li River affords opportunities for a slower look at classical scenes (such as the one featured on the 20Yuan note) of karst formations, lumbering water buffaloes, and sleepy farming villages. We’ll meet families here and cycle through the dreamy valleys.

Careful attention in paid to regional cuisine; we’ll enjoy steam-pot cooking, barbecue, fried tea, rice-four noodles, and cheese – a surprising vestige of Mongolian culture.
