On the Edge of the Carpathians

May 28 - Jun 07, 2021

11 days | Austria | Quest Nature Tours

We’re excited to venture into the historic ‘Heart of Europe’ for this tour that showcases this land’s unexpected natural highlights at a most pleasant time of year. We’ll visit steppe lakes, idyllic prairie reserves, and oak forests where we’ll enjoy the various specialty birds, mammals, wildflowers, and more.

After a day in the imperial capital city of Vienna, we’ll visit Neusiedler See, the largest steppe lake in Europe. Our lodge is located in the centre of the national park, and we’ll look for a range of waterfowl, raptors, and wading birds. In the past, we’ve been successful in seeing the courtship of male Great Bustards engaging in their “foambath” displays! A regional highlight will be our visit to an active colony of beautiful European Bee-eaters.

At the Deviínska Kobyla Nature Reserve we’ll find some of the finest regional flowers in full bloom. In Moravia, we’ll visit the grounds of the neo-Gothic castle in Lednice. We’ll be staying for three nights in the highly-rated HranicÌŒnií Chateau Hotel while we explore this region, also known for its fine wines.

After touring the White Carpathian meadows, we‘ll arrive in the lake region of TrÌŒebonÌŒ, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. We’ll find a network of medieval waterways where White-tailed Eagles are found. Folk architecture prevails in the countryside and town gates, castles, and ancient fortifications abound. Our journey ends with two days in Prague, considered by many to be the most beautiful and unspoiled city in Europe.
