South Africa: The Cape and the Kalahari

Aug 25 - Sep 10, 2021

17 days | South Africa | Quest Nature Tours

Tour Leader Pete Read recently hosted a webinar about this tour and what he's most looking forward to. Click here to watch (30 min.)

On this tour we’ll discover the exceptional diversity and eclectic qualities of western South Africa. We’ll be in ‘the Cape’ in the austral spring when many plants such as the dazzling Proteas and bulb-bearing wildflowers will be in bloom, and bird breeding activity will be at its height.

We’ll begin around scenic Cape Town at the very heart of the fynbos, the distinctive shrubland habitat containing the world’s highest concentration of endemic plants, many simply bizarre and astonishing. The habitats are striking in and of themselves, and also form a fine backdrop for the area’s wonderful bird life. Among the coveted birds we’ll watch for the Cape Rock-jumper and visit an African Penguin colony on the coast. We’ll then travel steadily northward along the west coast where vast areas should be awash in blossoms. We’ll watch for some of the many peculiar birds including the Black Harrier and Blue Crane and encounter our first large mammals here including the threatened Cape Mountain Zebra.

In Namaqualand and the Kalahari to the north, we may – depending on the rains – find a land cloaked in an unparalleled floral show. We’ll also visit uncanny habitats defined by such captivating succulents as the tiny Lithops and the imposing Quiver Tree and hosting their own complement of distinctive wildlife. Finally, in Kgalagadi (Kalahari) National Park, we’ll find a variety of quintessentially African wildlife adapted to the semi-desert including the Kalahari’s famous black-maned African Lions.

If you enjoy sweeping landscapes and the chance to see peculiar and endemic wildlife, consider joining us on this fabulous tour! Wine tasting optional.

The combination of Cape and Kalahari left travellers on our last tour speechless. Please call us to register for our next small-group tour to this amazing country!

A post-tour extension to Blyde River Canyon and Kruger National Park is available. Please enquire.

Justin penned a blog article about zebras, including the Cape Mountain Zebra that we should see on this tour.
