The Architourist in India

Architecture lover and Toronto advocate Dave LeBlanc is hitting the road for a series of tours focused on architecture and design in some of the world’s most intriguing destinations. Trip #1 is to India, home to some of the world’s most astounding architecture. Dave will be discovering both her artistic heritage and her contemporary expressions of style.

The architectural record in North India is spectacular. We’ll visit imposing royal forts and palace, Indo-Saracenic colonial buildings, fantastically ornamented temples, and rambling urban bazaars. Appreciate the opulence and grandeur of Rajput fortress palaces, fusing Hindu and Mughal styles, in Jaipur and Jodhpur. See grand monuments like Delhi’s Qutub Minar and brilliant red or white royal tombs at Agra’s Itmad-ud-Daula. Wend your way through the bustling bazaars and explore Rajasthan’s vibrant folk culture. Learn about the beautiful and functional water buildings in ancient step wells.

Amongst examples of the modern is Le Corbusier’s ambitious post-Independence design for the city of Chandigarh which galvanized Modern building practices and spurred local architects to develop national styles blending Modernism with ancient principles. We’ll be visiting studios of contemporary block print artists and galleries displaying works by cutting-edge Indian artists.

There’ll be glorious food, soul-stirring spirituality, and high style in all its myriad forms. We’ll be guided by local experts plus you’ll have plenty of time to explore independently, equipped with our little black book of favourite style sources. Join us for a unique and most exciting look at North India.
