Winter Birding on “The Rock"

Jan 16-22, 2025

7 days | Canada | Birding

Winter is a great time to enjoy Newfoundland through its bird life! Not only is the scenery typically draped in some degree of magical snow, but this is a time and place where bird life that is often out of reach to most of us is at its most accessible.

Various waterbirds that breed on Arctic shores come down here to spend the winter. Newfoundland’s position in the easternmost reaches North America also means that the chance of vagrant birds ending up here is quite possible, from birds of farther west and south that can wander no further, to birds of Europe that gain a toehold here. That is not even to mention "The Rock’s” tundra and boreal habitats, which are home to their own complement of bird life. There is a pervasive “anything-goes” feel here. On this tour of discovery, we explore Newfoundland’s scenic Avalon Peninsula where multiple habitats meet in a unique combination.

We visit historic outposts nestled in scenic inlets and watch for any signs of movement as we travel along each day. We walk in the Boreal Forest and scan the tundra. In addition to bird life, we’ll look for other wildlife, including the Newfoundland Caribou.

If you love sweeping landscapes, the sea, and birds, and are looking for a great excuse to enjoy the winter, bundle up and join us for a different type of winter experience!
