The current climate of uncertainty with regards to our health has reminded us of our vulnerability as well as our interconnectedness. While we must limit our physical travels for the time being due to the current circumstances, you don’t need to let your sense of curiosity and yearning for discovery end.

We’re always on the lookout for interesting things that expand our awareness of the world around us. We’ve curated a selection of items that might interest you to derive enjoyment and expand your horizons!

Please share with us your favourite websites and suggestions and we’ll post these on this blog as well.

For the art enthusiast

Thanks to technology, you can “go to the museum” from home. Some of the world’s greatest museums offer online tours or online collection browsing.

The British Museum’s collection online offers you unparalleled access to objects in the collection. There are over 4,000,000 objects available to view here.

Google Arts & Culture has an ‘Art Camera’ that lets you zoom into great works of art from museums and galleries around the world. Get a closer look at great works of art and enjoy ‘guided tours’ by experts on key works.

The Metropolian Opera is providing some grand opera solace to opera lovers for the duration of their closure. Tune in and enjoy “Nightly Met Opera Streams,” a free series of encore Live in HD presentations beginning at 7:30pm EDT.

#lookingupatbuildings is one of our favourite hashtags to follow. Now we can also look up at astonishing ceilings. Take a look at 10 Astonishing Ceilings You Can See Up Close and appreciate these extraordinary works of art, without having to crane your neck!

You could also explore some of India’s most iconic sights. This website takes you on a tour of Six Iconic Indian Stone Monuments from the Taj Mahal to Laurielle’s favourite, the ancient village of Hampi.

For the nature and wildlife lover

Enjoy a foray into the world of bird watching and enjoy a change of scenery as you explore live-cams. These cameras have been set up to allow you to discreetly observe play-by-play activities of birds, either at their nests, or at bird feeders, as they happen.

We are now well within the breeding season for Bald Eagles. You can observe nest cams at a location at White Rock Bluff in beautiful British Columbia here. There are currently two eggs in the nest!

The Cornell Lab of Ornithology at Cornell University has a couple of bird feeder station cams from very different parts of the world. If you would like to enjoy birds and the ambiance of Central America, you can check out their fruit feeder cam in Panama here. See Clay-colored Thrushes, Rufous Motmots, various tanagers, euphonias and more as they feed on oranges and papayas!

For a cooler and more refreshing experience, visit the FeederWatch cam at Manitouwadge in northern Ontario for lovely (and lively) Evening Grosbeaks, Pine Siskins and Blue Jays.

Make sure you increase the volume on your computer or tablet for full effect.
