There’s no shortage of spiritual or mind-bending places to explore in Indonesia. Experience it all with a Worldwide Quest President’s Tour this fall! We asked Lewie Gonsalves what he’s most looking forward to seeing and experiencing with the group:

Tanah Lot complex

Ubud
Eat, Pray, Love and Julia Roberts... terraced rice fields and quaint markets I expected, but what was surprising to me was the underlying spirituality. Temples, shrines, gods and demons abound and can be found at every corner and in every home.

Mount Bromo

Mount Bromo
Is one of the most iconic mountain in Indonesia. It beckons majestically despite having the entire top blown off and with a crater inside that keeps spewing off white sulphurous smoke. At sunrise I found it spectacular!

Traditional Balinese offerings to Gods

Adding to the experience is the practice where, to appease the Gods, the local people offer food and money by throwing it into the crater of the volcano during annual Kasada festival!

 Tau tau

Toraja
A place lost in time where the Toraja still practice ancient rites, despite adopting Christians beliefs after the arrival of the Dutch. The apparent preoccupation with death seen in cave graves, hanging graves, tau tau (life sized wooden effigies), baby tree graves and even the mass slaughter of buffaloes…left me with strange but captivating feeling.

Komodo Dragon

Komodo Dragon
The Komodo Dragon have a fearsome reputation which has become the stuff of legends. In the company of experienced local guides, and from a safe distance, we will search out these pre-historic looking creatures that prowl this otherwise picturesque part of the world where we will have a chance to swim with sea turtles, manta rays and rock-hole island among incredible arrays of corals and fish.
