BUDDHIST TEMPLES & TOWERING PEAKS
The massive Tibetan plateau or “the roof of the world” is propped up by mountains on all sides and thus offers jaw-dropping views of the world’s tallest peaks. Living in deep harmony with nature is an integral part of Tibetan Buddhism, which has been a major benefit to species such as the Giant Panda, Red Panda, Himalayan Monal and Eared Pheasant of the eastern and southern region as well as hearty species like Tibetan Antelope and Wild Yak in the north. The Jokhang Temple is Tibet’s spiritual centre and is consequently a top pilgrimage destination. The Potala Palace at Lhasa is also not to be missed what with its unique spiritual atmosphere. Just outside Lhasa are the monasteries of Drepung and Sera – the largest in the world – and the temples of Shigastse and Gyantse. Immersing yourself in the dramatic mountains and deep spirituality of Tibet is sure to be a stirring experience for body and soul.
