Bhutan & the Thimphu Festival

A big idea from a tiny country: to measure gross national happiness to ensure a just, equal, and harmonious society. On this trip to the “Land of the Thunder Dragon”, we embody this philosophy as we marvel at magnificent scenery, monasteries, fortresses and take part in the most colourful festival in Bhutan.

Acclimatize first in Darjeeling with front-row views of Khangchendzonga, the third highest mountain in the world, towering over emerald-green tea plantations. Spend two days in Thimphu during the Thimphu Tsechu, a vibrant spectacle with elements of both religious ceremony and country fair. The main event is the sacred dance; the cham is performed by costumed dancers accompanied by musicians chanting and playing drums, cymbals, and long horns. Jesters in bright red masks frolic in the audience as we mingle with children playing, elders grasping prayer wheels and men and women dressed in traditional colourfully woven robes.

We travel overland through a stunningly beautiful landscape; blissful valleys and fields of rhododendruns are dotted with spectacular fortresses and temples, crowned by snow
capped peaks. As we travel we learn about Bhutanese textiles, woodcarvings, and folklore, and gain understanding into the country’s unique culture and ancient traditions. Our guides provide insights and connections, arranging visits to yak herding families, archery practice, and meetings with artisans preparing hand- painted murals.

And to cap it o we take that exhilarating hike to the iconic Tiger’s Nest Monastery. Add your prayer flag to the rope and let the breeze carry your wishes away...
