Fogo Island & St. John's with U of T (Spring)

Encounter the spectacular scenery, the daring architecture, and the traditions of the Newfoundland way of life Start in St. John’s, an exciting contrast of old and new. A local historian will introduce this character- lled city, one of the oldest in North America, a curator will show us through The Rooms, a fascinating cultural hub with art gallery, museum, and archives, and a Memorial University scholar will share his thoughts on the province’s future. We’ll also enjoy a “sco and a scu ” – a meal followed by dancing and traditional music.

A drive through scenic Terra Nova National Park and ‘Come from Away’ Gander, takes us to Farewell Harbour where we board the ferry to Fogo Island. Then enjoy four nights at the multi-award-winning Fogo Island Inn, a traditional yet contemporary masterpiece of modern architecture and design. You may never want to leave your room with its dramatic oor-to-ceiling windows that open onto the wildest and most powerful ocean on the planet. Venture out and you’ll be treated to a range of daily activities as varied as the weather. Join a community host for an insider’s look at the island’s natural and cultural heritage; watch for caribou and whales as you walk the the rugged coastline on a choice of 200 kilometres of walking trails and paths; meet one of the resident artist who are invited to create works in specially designed studios; tour nearby Tilting to see heritage buildings associated with the family-based in-shore shery. And all the while enjoy fabulous meals featuring locally sourced produce, sh, and game, listen to the lilt of local music, and gaze at a million stars from the rooftop.

April on Fogo Island is a time of excitement and renewal. Fishermen are gearing up for the busy season and the Island’s waters are punctuated by passing icebergs and whales.
