Japan: Ancient and Contemporary

Tour Leader Judi Cohen wrote a blog about Japan! "I want to share with you some of my most memorable moments in Japan that have inspired me to return again and again in search of new and unique experiences." Click here to read it...

Perhaps more than any country in the world, Japan successfully, and intriguingly, combines proud, ancient traditions with an enthusiastic embrace of all things modern. This apparent dichotomy is the theme of our trip.

In Tokyo, we will visit the Meiji Shrine, a favourite spot for traditional Japanese weddings, and the bustling Akihabara electronics as well as a traditional Edo Period garden surrounded by the futuristic skyscrapers of the new Japan. We'll check out the latest 'harajuku' and 'otaku' futuristic displays. We'll also visit the fast-paced Miyagawa morning market and enjoy a contemplative Zen Buddhist Tea Ceremony. In Kyoto we'll take to bicycles to discover the many exquisite temples and enjoy an evening walking tour of the Gion district of “Memoirs of a Geisha” fame. We will travel between cities on the famous Shinkansen Bullet Trains which reach speeds of up to 300km/hour, coupled with private bus coach to enjoy the stunning scenic routes. And we'll sample the incredible variety of Japanese cuisine from the Mitsukoshi Department Store's extraordinary food hall to shabu-shabu and traditional 'shojin ryori'.

Our accommodations will reflect this mix; we will stay in upscale hotels in the large cities of Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka; in a Ryokan with a communal onsen (mineral bath area) tatami floor mats and rooms divided by shoji sliding doors, a totally authentic Japanese experience, in Takayama; and the ultimate highlight will be a stay in Shukubo, where we overnight at the Buddhist Temple lodging at the top of Mount Koya, the ancient centre of Shungon Buddhism.

I love adventurous and off-the-beaten-path travel like Africa, Japan, Myanmar, exotic river cruising, heli-hiking in the Bugaboos (Canada) and Antarctica. I have been to over 80 countries on 6 continents. My motto: Feel the fear and do it anyway! My goal is to die with memories not dreams.
