Most Liveable Cities: Detroit

May 21-25, 2020

5 days | USA | Most Liveable Cities

WITH STEPHEN SIMPSON AND ANN KIRKLAND
Detroit is a city of vigor many of us don’t know from what we see in the news. It’s a place where neighbors are reimagining work, food, housing and, fundamentally, what it means to be human.
Get to know Detroit from the inside out, from those who love their city more than anything. Join us this May in Detroit!

Did you know:

Detroiters are Detroit’s greatest asset. Detroiters have never stopped caring. A fiercely independent, optimistic, resilient, and creative spirit has existed in the city for decades. Many who could have left have doubled down and stayed. “We’re a people who make a way out of no way, something all of our Southern grandparents and great-grandparents passed down to us.” – Journalist Aaron Foley

Detroit has a Chief Storyteller. When Foley, a Detroit native, was approached by Mayor Mike Duggan to help shape a new narrative about the people living and working in Detroit’s neighbourhoods, he jumped at the chance. In 2017, Foley became Detroit’s first “chief storyteller” — an unusual title for a job in local government.

Detroit’s 200 plus neighborhoods are the spirit of the city. The city’s diverse population includes people of French, Belgian, German, Hispanic, Polish, Greek, Italian, and Middle Eastern background, in addition to its predominant African-American population. Each adds its rich cultural traditions.

The city has a rich inter-ethnic history. African Americans and Jewish Americans have interacted throughout much of Detroit’s history. This relationship has included widely publicized cooperation and conflict and is now being nurtured with care and commitment.

And there’s more...

We will start with stories. Places can best be understood as a “story,” a story told, not by outside professionals who come to study, analyze, and denigrate a place, but by the people who call it home.

We will visit revitalized neighbourhoods, talk to residents and planners, enjoy dinner and music at the oldest jazz club in the world, and be guided through the famed Eastern Market.

Long-time Detroit booster Dr. Stephen Simpson, and his recent convert, Ann Kirkland, are bursting with excitement about this trip. Join them on this unique and exciting trip, and discover the vitality, community, and joy that are Detroit.
