Oman: From the Empty Quarter to the Ocean

One of Arabia’s undiscovered gems, Oman’s rise as one of the most interesting travel destinations in the Middle East is not surprising. Blessed with vast deserts, breath taking mountain gorges, and rugged coastline, the country remains blissfully tranquil.

Home to the legendary Sinbad the Sailor, Oman combines traditional Arabic and Islamic styles with ancient fortifications and architectural treasures that set it apart from its flashier peninsular neighbours. The land is rich in both natural and manmade attractions. Impressive wadis (valleys) formed by ancient rivers cut through mountains contrast with barren desert dunes and the luscious green of the south. There are gleaming mosques and lively souqs in the capital and traditional villages with ancient fort ruins in the interior.

From the rustic peace of the capital Muscat, we set off through the ‘Empty Quarter’, the largest sand desert in the world, to visit carefully restored forts, discover traditional villages, and get off-road in the lush green wadis perfumed with the scent of damask roses. In the southern city of Salalah, a surprisingly lush Eden in a land of 80% desert, we’ll explore the land of frankincense.

Unbroken sunshine, a friendly and fascinating culture, atmospheric forts, vast deserts, and dramatic mountains are all part of this relaxed exploration of Oman.

Your Tour Leader

Paula Swart is a museum curator and expert on Asian culture and history. Paula has degrees in Sinology, Asian art history, Chinese history, and archaeology and has published several books and numerous articles on the art and architecture of Asian cultures. Paula is a lecturer at the University of British Columbia and has recently been teaching courses on UNESCO World Heritage sites at the UBC Summer Institute and the University of Victoria.
