Peru & Bolivia

This tour visits key sites of the Inca Empire and lets us contemplate how the past and the present intertwine. Tradition is the basis for innovation here; Inca stonework is reinvented in modern buildings; exquisite weavings are knit into fresh patterns; traditional cuisine is the basis for some of the most ‘of-the-moment’ restaurants.

Sophisticated Lima sets the tone displaying its millennia-old civilization, culinary genius, and a fresh creative confidence. In the Sacred Urubamba Valley we consider the archeological and spiritual impetus responsible for masterful Incan masonry. In colourful markets and small villages we’ll meet Quechua people who are safeguarding ancient weaving techniques to maintain their communities. We’ll be energized by our time at mystical Machu Picchu, the ‘crown jewel’ of Inca civilization. In Cusco we’ll admire the juxtaposition of ornate cathedrals and Inca ruins. The journey overland to Puno crosses breathtaking landscapes with the Andes as backdrop.

We visit the mystical Lake Titicaca, where we’ll stay for two nights in a charming adobe ecolodge on a peaceful, meditative island in the middle of the lake. Sunset views of the lake from the hilltop are immensely satisfying. Our trip concludes in the bustling city of La Paz, clinging to canyon walls in a most dramatic setting surrounded by snow-capped mountains. Local chefs, artists, and community members are breathing new life into the historic centre – you won’t want to miss it.
