Uzbekistan: Heart of the Silk Road

Uzbekistan takes hold of the imagination as few places do. It is home to some of the oldest towns in the world including the legendary cities of the fabled Silk Road. An exotic, fabled destination, it is also warm, welcoming, and surprisingly cosmopolitan.

From the modern capital of Tashkent with its broad tree-lined avenues and one of Asia’s oldest (and friendliest) markets, we fly to Nukus at the centre of an area criss-crossed by ancient caravan routes. Here, hidden from the world, is the foremost collection of 20th Century Russian avant-garde painting acquired from persecuted Soviet artists. Then it’s onward overland through farmland and desert and past Zoroastrian Towers of Silence to the beautifully preserved walled city of Khiva, a photographer’s delight. Our route continues across stretches of the Kyzyl Kum (the Red Sands Desert), a landscape of dunes, saxaul bushes, and distant mountains, punctuated by desert citadels and oasis towns.

We stay for three nights in Bukhara, absorbing the magic of this extraordinary place. We walk all through town, stopping in at madrassahs, minarets, a royal fortress, and the mulberry tree-shaded central square where we enjoy tea at a lovely chaikhana. A highlight of this trip is standing on Samarkand’s iconic Registan Square with the three spectacular azure-hued domed buildings towering over you – possibly the single most awesome sight in Central Asia.
