Costa Rica’s Northwest: In the Time of Turtles

The mass nestings of the Olive Ridley Sea Turtle is a special event that takes place only in a very few locations of the South Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans during a narrow window in each lunar cycle. This tour takes us to Costa Rica’s scenic northwest to observe the ‘arribada’ when the volcanic sand beaches stir as thousands, and occasionally hundreds of thousands of female turtles come to land to lay their eggs in a soul-stirring phenomenon! 

Join us for this exploration of a lesser-known region of Costa Rica and encounter what makes it so special. In the interior, we’ll walk on trails at Rincón de la Vieja National Park, discovering Guanacaste’s distinctive ‘Tropical Dry Forest’ habitat as well as the geologic forces underfoot. Towards the Bay of Nicoya, we’ll cruise on the lower Tempisque River, which drains a good part of the province and remains watered even in the dry season. From our three-night base close to the Pacific Ocean we’ll hike, kayak, and explore by day and observe the famed ‘arribadas’ by night! 

Each of three hotels are in prime locations to enjoy the remarkable diversity of habitats in the northwest of Costa Rica. From deep in the jungle, to a traditional estancia, to a casual beach resort, we’ll enjoy comfortable accommodation throughout the tour.
