North India: Celebrating the Festival of Colours

Rajasthan is perhaps best loved for its pageantry. On this tour we experience all of that magnificent colour and vitality, visiting the grandest forts and joining in that happiest of Indian festivals: Holi, or the Festival of Colours.

After a brief look at the essentials of the capital Delhi, we head to Agra to marvel at the incomparable Taj Mahal and get inside Agra Fort. Then we’ll head to the ‘Pink City’ of Jaipur to celebrate Holi. People of all ages take to the streets to douse each other in coloured powder, or gulal, and literally paint the town red (and pink and blue and green).

Then we’ll head deeper into the heart of Rajasthan. On this trip the drives are half the fun; we share the road with bejeweled camels, sacred cows, cycle rickshaws, and brightly decorated trucks. We’ll enjoy a homestay, where the home is a restored palace and meet the family keeping village traditions alive. You’ll be enchanted by Jaisalmer Fort, rising from the desert like a massive golden sandcastle and by the massive Ahhichatragarh Fort. Here enjoy a rare chance to stay in a private 18th century garden palace – wander its frescoed halls and feel the pulse of the ages.

We round off our trip in the sublimely beautiful ‘Blue City’ of Jodhpur to admire the views from the height of Kipling’s Mehrangarh Fort. This tour will appeal equally to those who have visited India previously and to the India “newbie”, eager for a tastefully curated experience of this region.
