'The Call of the Wild' in Costa Rica

Tour Leader Wendy O'Brien recently hosted a webinar about this tour! Click here to watch (20 mins.)

There is no question that we experience the call of the wild. There is something about places that remain uninhabited and perhaps uninhabitable that draws us. But what is the source of this call? What are we seeking when we travel to places that are removed and remote? Can we find what we are looking for?

To explore these questions, we travel to Costa Rica, to a jungle lodge located within a pristine tropical rainforest on 800 acres of private biological reserve. With its positioning in the jungle and the array of wildlife at hand, the lodge provides a unique vantage point from which to investigate this call.

Our start and end our trip at the Xandari Resort near San Jose, amidst lush gardens and spectacular views of Costa Rica’s Central Valley. We stay for seven nights at highly rated Tiskita Jungle Lodge; a small-scale, family-run ecolodge. Each day we’ll meet to do something interesting as a group and meet again for discussions. There will be organized activities and also time for personal reflection and explorations.

We’ll undertake philosophy fieldwork via our lived experience of the jungle, raising questions about the romance and the reality of the wild, considering what is known and unknowable about such spaces, and reflecting on the nature of stewardship as we aim to develop a better understanding, that is, a phenomenology of the wild.
