South Portugal in Spring '25

Apr 07-16, 2025

10 days | Portugal | Quest Nature Tours

In mid-April while much of the temperate north is still plodding through the cool days of early spring, the warm season is already well underway in South Portugal. Migratory birds have returned from their African wintering grounds; dazzling butterflies seek nectar over wildflower-covered hillsides; and Cork Oak trees have replaced last year’s leaves with fresh ones.

On this leisurely tour, we visit three distinct regions: Lisbon-area estuaries, the rolling hills of the Alentejo, and the south coast of the Algarve — all in relatively close proximity to one another owing to Portugal’s small size. This gives us sufficient time to deeply connect with each region and observe its unique animals and plants, many of which are endemic to the Iberian Peninsula. Olive groves and vineyards are always close by, meaning there are continuous opportunities to sample fresh local foods and fine wine.

Just to the east of Lisbon is the Tagus Estuary, where flamingoes feed alongside waterfowl and other wading birds on the extensive inter-tidal mudflats and salt marshes. At the nearby Companhia das Lezírias, learn about the fascinating and sustainable process of cork extraction while sipping local wine among Cork Oak trees. Inland to the southeast are the rolling hills of the Alentejo. Here, meadows filled with colourful native wildflowers attract myriad butterflies, while cereal steppe is the haunt of sandgrouse and bustards. The tapestry of dunes and wetlands along the south coast in the Algarve hosts specialty plants and herptiles, including Mediterranean Chameleons. Standing atop the cliffs at land’s-end in Sagres and Cape St. Vincent is a spell-binding experience. On our way back to Lisbon, we visit the Monchique Mountains to gaze back over Portugal’s magnificent southwestern shore.

We can expect warm days and sunny skies as we immerse ourselves in the natural phenomena that intersect in South Portugal each spring.
